Author Jim Bredeson creates a detailed local history focusing on his father and uncles who served during World War II. The Bredesons lived on the River Road just a couple miles north of Argyle when the war started. Some of the older children were living in Rockford or on Green County farms. Out of 12 adult children, seven of them served during and after the war. They all survived, but some were physically or psychologically battered.
The Bredeson Boys in World War II captures the Bredeson family history in Argyle Township before the war, and illustrates the fears and efforts of the community trying to make sense of the battles raging overseas and on the home front. Much like the Covid-19 era of today, the war effort was a disruptive force for every citizen and farmer and cheesemaker in Lafayette County and beyond.
Jim Bredeson worked most of his life as an academic librarian in Beloit, Milwaukee, Baraboo, and Madison. He was a newspaper journalist and freelance writer earlier in his career and took stabs at truck driving, factory work, and construction along the way. In his youth, he spent many wonderful weekends and summers on the Gus Johnson farm on Lake Road. His father was Victor Bredeson and his mother was Rose Marie Johnson Bredeson, both buried in Yellowstone Church Cemetery.
